The seat had been held by Ray Jones since 2001, but it became vacant when he resigned after being elected judge executive.
The district encompasses the counties of Elliott, Martin, Lawrence, Morgan, and Pike.

After a 16-year legislative career, state Rep. Mike Pitts will step down from his House District 14 seat on January 3, 2019.
The first to announce his candidacy for the seat is Stewart Jones, a small business owner and former chairman of the Lakelands Republican Liberty Caucus.
The primary election to fill Pitts’ seat will take place on February 19, 2019, and the special election is scheduled for April 23, 2019.
If a runoff is needed, it will take place on March 5, 2019.

In October, she was convicted of bribery, conflict of interest, and failure to properly file a financial disclosure report. The state constitution prevents her from continuing to serve in the Legislature.
Lowery Brown plans to appeal her conviction.
A special election could be set as early as March to fill the western Philadelphia seat.

Gov. Greg Abbott called a special election this week to fill a vacancy after the surprise resignation of state senator Carlos Uresti.
Uresti, a democrat representing Texas Senate District 19, was convicted on 11 felony counts of fraud and money laundering earlier this year but refused to resign until the appeals process was complete.
Uresti urged the governor to hold the election in November to coincide with the regularly scheduled election to save taxpayer money but Gov. Abbott scheduled the emergency special election for July 31, 2018, noting Uresti’s district has been “without effective representation” for over a year as a result of legal troubles.

The filing deadline to run for the Kansas Senate seat in District 13 passed setting up unopposed elections for both the Democratic and Republican primaries on August 7.
Incumbent state Sen. Richard Hilderbrand will run against the primary winners in the special election set for November 6.
Hilderbrand was appointed last year when former Sen. Jacob LaTurner accepted the position of state treasurer.
The winner of the special election will complete the remaining two years of LaTurner’s term.

The date of the special election has not yet been determined, but must be called for within 10 days of the seat being vacated. The election must then be between 30 and 60 days later.
