Gov. Tim Walz issued a writ of special election to fill the vacant seat in House District 52B following the resignation of State Representative Ruth Richardson.

The special election will be held on December 5.

A special primary, if necessary, will be held on November 16.

This special election date allows for the new representative to be seated when the legislative session convenes on Tuesday, February 12, 2024.

Gov. Kay Ivey announced the dates for a special election to fill the House District 10 seat vacated by Rep. David Cole after pleading guilty to a charge of voter fraud.

The primary election for the seat will be held on December 12, and if necessary, the primary runoff will be held on January 9, 2024.

The special general election will be held on March 26, 2024.

A special election has been called for Senate District 19 following the death of Sen. John Scott on August 13.

The primary will be on October 24 with a primary runoff occurring on November 7, if necessary.

The special general election will be held on January 2, 2024, just a week before the legislative session is set to begin.

A special election will be held to fill the vacant seat in Senate District 32 that was held by John Michael Montgomery.

Montgomery resigned from his seat in the Oklahoma Senate to take a position as the President and CEO of the Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce.

The special primary election will be held on Tuesday, October 10.

If a special primary election is not necessary, the special general election will be held on Tuesday, December 12.

Voters rejected a Republican-backed measure that would have made it more difficult to change the state’s constitution with 57% voting no and just under 43% voting yes.

Issue 1 would have required a 60% vote to approve any constitutional amendment rather than the current simple majority.

The measure would have also changed the signature requirement for initiative petitions to require 5% signatures from each county of the state and it would have eliminated the cure period to obtain more signatures.

Twelve candidates are running in the September 5, 2023, Democratic special primary for Rhode Island’s 1^st Congressional District.

The special election will take place November 7 and will be the first congressional special election in Rhode Island since the 1967.

The seat became vacant following incumbent Democratic Representative David Cicilline’s resignation to become the CEO of the Rhode Island Foundation. 

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul scheduled a special election following the resignation of Assemblyman Dan Rosenthal.

The election to fill the vacancy in Assembly District 27 will be held on September 12.

Rosenthal, who was first elected at 26, is backing Sam Berger who is 25 years old and the son of a Democratic district leader.

A special election will take place on November 7, 2023 for Senate District 42.

Senator Marlon Kimpson previously held the seat but resigned upon being tapped to join the Biden administration.

Sen. Kimpson was appointed to the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations.

If necessary, a special primary election will be held on September 5 and the special election primary runoff on September 19.

This does affect reporting, and the next report will be due on October 23, 2023.

On June 19, federal by-elections will be held in the electoral districts of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce–Westmount (Quebec), Oxford (Ontario), Winnipeg South Centre (Manitoba) and Portage–Lisgar (Manitoba) to fill vacancies in the House of Commons.

From December 2022 until March of this year, the Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Stéphane Perrault, received four separate official notices from the Speaker of the House of Commons that the seats were vacant. However, the dates for the election were not announced until May 14, when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a single election date for all four of the vacant seats in the House of Commons.

Three of the seats became vacant by retirement, and the fourth, for Winnipeg South Centre, became vacant upon the death of MP Jim Carr. The announcement date of the by-elections signals the start of the by-election period.

Lawmakers voted to schedule a special election on August 8, with the adoption of Senate Joint Resolution 2.

The special election is for a ballot issue proposing a constitutional amendment to require approval by 60%  of voters to approve any constitutional amendment which would be effective immediately upon voter approval. The current requirement is for a majority vote.

The constitutional amendment also modifies procedures for an initiative petition proposing a constitutional amendment by prohibiting any additional signatures to be filed for the initiative petition, if found to be insufficient.

If a referendum petition or an initiative petition proposing a law is determined to be insufficient, ten additional days will be allowed for the filing of additional signatures.

The amendment also changes the signature requirements for an initiative petition proposing an amendment to the constitution to require from each county of the state petitions bearing the signatures of not less than five per cent of the electors of the county, while for all other initiative, supplementary, and referendum petitions the signature requirement remains unchanged, requiring petitions from one-half of the counties bearing signatures of one-half the percentage of electors in the county.

These changes would be effective January 1, 2024, if approved by voters.

A special election will be held for the currently vacant seat in Pennsylvania House District 163.

The district was previously represented by former Rep. Mike Zabel.

Zabel resigned in March after harassment allegations involving Rep. Abby Major.

The special election will take place on May 16.

After the expulsion and reappointment of Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, the elections for House districts 52 and 86 have been established.

The special primary election will take place June 15 and the special general election will be held August 3.

A special election has been scheduled to fill the upcoming vacancy in the state’s 1^st Congressional District.

The seat will become vacant when Rep. David Cicilline’s resignation takes effect on June 1.

A primary election will be held on September 5, followed by a general election on November 7.

The winner of the special election will serve the remainder of the term set to expire on January 3, 2025.

State senators Rob McColley and Theresa Gavarone introduced Senate Bill 92, a bill to permit special elections to be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in August under any of the following circumstances:

• For the purpose of submitting a statewide ballot issue to the voters under Section 1 of Article XVI, Ohio Constitution
• When a primary election is required preceding a special election to fill a vacancy in an office
• For the election of a party candidate for U.S. Congress due to the withdrawal, disqualification, or death of a congressional candidate prior to the 19th day before the day of the general election.

August elections for these purposes were eliminated by a law passed in 2021.
