A special election will take place on November 5 for City Council District 1.
The Long Beach City Council adopted a resolution at the July 9 meeting to conduct a special municipal election.
Lena Gonzalez relinquished the District 1 seat after winning the state Senate District 33 seat.
The council’s adoption of the resolution included a request to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to have the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk run the special election in November.

Rep. Stover was facing an ethics complaint regarding his residency and resigned to spend more time with his wife in the United Kingdom.
The winner of the special election will complete Stover’s term until 2020.

Unless one candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the top two candidates in the special primary election will face off in a special general election.
Assembly District one covers portions of the Northeastern part of California.

Steve Brandau stepped down from the District 2 City Council seat after winning the District 2 seat on the Fresno County Board of Supervisors.
If a runoff is required, the special runoff election will be held on November 5.
The elected candidate will serve the remainder of Brandau’s term, which ends in 2020.

More than 10,000 signatures are needed by July 12 to force a recall election for Sullivan’s replacement.
Former Rep. Rochelle Galindo was also facing a recall election but resigned on May 12.
A Democratic vacancy committee will name Galindo’s replacement.

The council appointed Clinton Woods to the District 1 seat formerly held by current Jefferson County Commissioner Lashunda Scales.
Crystal Smitherman was appointed to the District 6 seat previously held by current Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Tyson.
Following the resignation of Jay Roberson, who left the council after moving to Alabaster, the council appointed Wardine Alexander to the District 7 seat.

On May 5, Mayor Gavin Buckley issued a proclamation declaring the Ward 6 council seat vacant after the resignation of former Alderwoman Shaneka Henson.
Henson was selected to complete the term of the late Michael Busch in the Maryland House of Delegates.
Henson resigned after last Monday’s regular City Council meeting.
According to the City Charter, the Mayor had to issue a proclamation to fill the council seat within five days after receiving the resignation and schedule the dates for a special election.
The dates for the two special elections are the primary on June 4, with the general on July 2.

On April 17, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Dwight Ball issued a writ of election for the provincial general election to take place on May 16.
On the same day, Bruce Chaulk, the Chief Electoral Officer of Newfoundland and Labrador, issued election writs to all 40 district returning officers of the province announcing the new date.
The advance poll date is May 9 and the deadline for candidate nominations is April 25.
Elections NL is also set to accept early voting applications, which will be available between April 25 and May 9.
Ball called for the election after tabling the budget.
“I am now seeking a mandate from the people of our province to continue our plan,” Ball announced according to the Western Star.

On January 7, the Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Stéphane Perrault, had received official notice from the Speaker of the House of Commons that the seat became vacant following the resignation of Sheila Malcolmson, who resigned on January 2 to run in a provincial byelection.
On March 24, Elections Canada declared the May election date and announced the opening of its local office in Nanaimo-Ladysmith.
