Gov. Robert Bentley called a special election to fill the vacant seat in the House of Representatives for District 79.

The vacancy is a result of former House Speaker Mike Hubbard’s conviction on 12 felony ethics charges, which stripped Hubbard of his position as a member of the Legislature.

The special primary is set for September 13, 2016, and the special general election will take place on November 29, 2016.

A special election will be held on November 8 to fill a vacancy in the state Senate.

Sen. Kenny Alexander left the seat after being elected mayor of Norfolk on May 3. Alexander’s election, however, occurred too late to hold a primary for his replacement on the regular June 14 date. The governor, therefore, has given parties until July 15 to name their candidates.

Democrats will hold an unassembled caucus in Chesapeake and Norfolk on July 9, while it is unclear if Republicans will nominate a candidate. Del. Joe Lindsey and Del. Lionell Spruill Sr. are running to replace Alexander.

A special election has been called to fill a vacancy in the District 168 seat of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

The election is scheduled for July 12, 2016. Republican Thomas Killion formerly held the seat, but was elected to the state Senate at a special election in April.

Party leaders have until May 23 to choose a nominee and file papers with the state.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has set a date for a special election to fill Virgil Smith’s former state senate seat. Smith’s resignation became effective after beginning a 10-month jail sentence related to a shooting incident involving his ex-wife.

A primary election for the vacant 4th district seat will be held August 2, 2016. The general election is scheduled for November 8, 2016.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe will soon set a special election to fill the District 1 seat of the state senate. Sen. John Miller, who passed away Monday, leaves the seat open less than a year into a four-year term.

Given the state’s rules on when special elections can be held, the November 8 general election is the date the governor will most likely choose. District 1, a historically Democratic-leaning district, encompasses several areas including Newport News, Hampton, and Suffolk.

Sen. Miller won the seat last year by more than 5,700 votes.

A special election for House District 162, held on March 29, 2016, is headed for a runoff after no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote. Voters will return to the polls on April 26, 2016 to choose between Rev. Carl Gilliard and Alicia Blakely.

The winner will become the office’s incumbent for the May 24 primary. Josey Sheppard, Jr., who came in third, plans to run against Gilliard and Blakely in the May primary to determine who will hold the seat for the 2017-2018 term, as all three are running as Democrats.

Gov. Phil Bryant has set a special election to fill a vacant seat in the state House. The election for the District 29 seat will be held June 7, 2016, with a runoff on June 28, 2016, if necessary.

The position opened last week after Rep. Linda Coleman accepted an appointment as a circuit judge. She had served as District 29’s representative since 1992.

On April 9, 2016, a special primary election will be held for the Louisiana House District 29 seat, which has been left vacant by the death of Rep. Ronnie Edwards on February 24.

If no candidate receives a majority of the votes in the special primary election, a special runoff election will be held on May 14, 2016.

Gov. Susana Martinez has set a date for a special election to replace interim Secretary of State Brad Winter. Winter, who was appointed to the position following the resignation of former Secretary Dianna Duran, declined to seek election to the remainder of the four-year term.

A special primary election will be held June 7, 2016. The special general election is scheduled for November 8, 2016.

Gov. Snyder has called a special election to fill the vacancy in House District 28 following the appointment of State Rep. Derek Miller as the Macomb County Treasurer. The special primary election will be held on August 2, with the special general election slated for November 8. Both special elections align with the primary and general election dates for the current election cycle.

The special election is for a term running through January 1, 2017. Candidates are able to run for the term expiring on January 1, 2017 as well as the full term after.

On February 3, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced a special election will be held on May 7 for Texas House District 120. The winner will serve the remainder of the term for the seat left vacant by Ruth Jones McClendon, who resigned on January 31.

A special election will also be held on the same date for House District 139 to serve the unexpired term left vacant by Sylvester Turner, who became the mayor of Houston on January 2.

The special elections join the state’s May uniform election date.

A special election will be held May 17 for South Carolina State Senate District 4. If necessary, a primary election will take place on March 22, and a primary runoff will take place on April 5.

The seat was left vacant following the death of William O’Dell on January 7, 2016.

Following the resignation of State Sen. David Dutremble, Gov. LePage has set a date for a special election to fill the empty District 32 seat. The special election will be held on March 29.

Democrats, Republicans, and members of the Green party must hold caucuses to name a candidate by February 16.

A special election for the Massachusetts 10th Essex Representative District has been called to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Rep. Robert F. Fennell. The Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin announced the special primary election will be held on April 12. The general election will follow on May 10.
