Gov. Paul LePage stated he is going to call the Legislature back for a special session this summer.

LePage said the special session will address the deficit in funding and resources created by the passage of four separate laws by the Legislature.

The dates of the special session have yet to be announced.

Gov. Sam Brownback has set the date for the Legislature to return for a special session.

Lawmakers will return on June 23, 2016, giving them one week to pass new school funding legislation. The state Supreme Court deemed the current system unconstitutional and, according to the ruling, the Legislature needs to redistribute state funding before June 30.

The changes will likely involve shifting $38 million, but Brownback has yet to endorse a particular plan.

The Kansas Supreme Court recently rejected the state’s school funding system and set a deadline of June 30 to fix the funding system’s shortcomings.

No official date has been set for the session, but Brownback indicated it will be next month.

The announcement comes after Democratic lawmakers began a petition to force a special session, as provided for in the Kansas Constitution. Republican lawmakers, however, have been staunchly against a special session; instead, they advocated fighting the ruling in federal court.

On June 16, the New Hampshire Legislature will hold a special session to address state and local law enforcements’ efforts to combat the state’s rising heroin and opioid problem. Called by the legislative leadership, the special session is being applauded by Gov. Maggie Hassan. “I thank legislative leadership for working quickly to address this issue and committing to bring forward a clean bill … so that we can assist state and local law enforcement across the state in their efforts on the front lines to combat the heroin and opioid crisis,” Hassan said in a press release.

The 2016 regular session of the Louisiana Legislature adjourned sine die on June 6, 2016. Upon transmittal of a bill, Gov. John Bel Edwards will have 20 days to sign or veto legislation.

A special session was also convened on June 6 and must adjourn by midnight on June 23. Edwards called the special session in May for the Legislature to address the state’s budget shortfall for the fiscal year beginning on July 1.

The West Virginia Legislature passed a budget bill Thursday that is being sent to Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin’s desk.

Upon the bill’s passage on the 13th day of a special session, the Legislature decided to recess the session until June 12.

The governor is expected to veto the bill. The state faces a potential government shutdown if a budget is not approved before July 1.

The second regular session of the 121st South Carolina General Assembly adjourned Thursday, June 2.

The Legislature is expected to return for a special session on Wednesday, June 15, and may continue in statewide session, if necessary, until not later than June 22.

Prior to adjournment, both houses were working to reach an agreement on an ethics reform bill requiring complaints against legislators to be independently investigated. Senate Judiciary Chairman Larry Martin is optimistic a compromise can pass during the upcoming special session.

On June 1, the New Hampshire Legislature adjourned its final full day in session. Recessed until the next call of the chair by the House and Senate, the legislative body may meet again for a veto session in the fall. When lawmakers meet to organize in December for the 2017 legislative session, the 2016 session will then be adjourned sine die.

Gov. Mark Dayton has outlined several conditions legislators must meet before he will call a special legislative session.

In a letter sent to House and Senate leaders, Dayton indicates they must agree on several points in the priority subjects of transportation, taxes, and numerous omissions in supplemental budget and bonding bills before he will call the session.

Several lawmakers have requested a special session after the Legislature recessed last month without passing an important bonding bill, but only Dayton has the authority to call the session.

The Kansas Legislature has adjourned its 2016 session sine die today, June 1, 2016.

Following a decision by the state’s Supreme Court disapproving of how funding is distributed among public schools, many were expecting lawmakers to take action during its typically ceremonial session. Senate leaders, however, blocked any consideration of a school funding bill, causing both houses to adjourn the session.

Gov. Sam Brownback will now have to call a special session if any changes will be made prior to a court-imposed deadline of June 30. Many Republican senators, however, are pledging to defy the court’s ruling.

On May 26, the 2016 spring sitting of the first session of the 33rd Yukon Legislative Assembly adjourned. Neither Bill 104, the Paid Lobbying Act, nor Bill 107, the Act to Amend the Elections Act with Respect to Political Contributions, were passed by the Assembly.

The spring sitting commenced on April 7, 2016. No future session is currently scheduled. The Legislature will likely meet again in the spring of 2017.

On May 27, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards issued a call for a second special session of the Louisiana Legislature. The special session will convene at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 6, and must adjourn by midnight on June 23.

The governor wants the Legislature to address the state’s budget shortfall for the fiscal year beginning on July 1. The Legislature is currently in session and is schedule to adjourn no later than June 6, the same day the special session is scheduled to begin.

The second regular session of the 55th Oklahoma Legislature adjourned sine die on Friday, May 27.

Prior to adjournment, lawmakers addressed the growing budget deficit and passed a budget, but failed to pass health care reform legislation or approve an increase on cigarette tax.

House Democrats say they would have supported the cigarette tax if Republicans had supported health care expansion.

On May 23, the Third Extraordinary Session of the 90th General Assembly adjourned sine die.

The primary focus of the special session was Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s $50 million highway funding plan. After three days, the plan was given final approval by the Legislature.
