Rep. Tom Marino announced his resignation from the U.S. House of Representatives on January 17.

Marino said he has accepted a job in the private sector, and his last day in Congress will be January 23.

Gov. Tom Wolf will have 10 days to set a date for a special election to fill the vacancy in the 12th Congressional District.

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a special election to fill the vacancy in the 1st Senate District.

The seat was vacated by Ted Gaines, who was sworn in as a member of the California State Board of Equalization.

The special primary election will be held on March 26, and, if necessary, a special runoff election will be on June 4.

A special primary election will take place on March 7 to fill a vacancy in Senate District 22.

Rep. Mark Green vacated the office to serve as U.S. Rep. for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District.

Senate District 22 represents Montgomery, Houston and Stewart counties.

Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin has called a special election to fill the vacancy in Senate District 31.

The seat had been held by Ray Jones since 2001, but it became vacant when he resigned after being elected judge executive.

The district encompasses the counties of Elliott, Martin, Lawrence, Morgan, and Pike.

After a 16-year legislative career, state Rep. Mike Pitts will step down from his House District 14 seat on January 3, 2019.

The first to announce his candidacy for the seat is Stewart Jones, a small business owner and former chairman of the Lakelands Republican Liberty Caucus.

The primary election to fill Pitts’ seat will take place on February 19, 2019, and the special election is scheduled for April 23, 2019.

If a runoff is needed, it will take place on March 5, 2019.

State Representative Vanessa Lowery Brown resigned on December 12 under protest.

In October, she was convicted of bribery, conflict of interest, and failure to properly file a financial disclosure report. The state constitution prevents her from continuing to serve in the Legislature.

Lowery Brown plans to appeal her conviction.

A special election could be set as early as March to fill the western Philadelphia seat.

A special election was called for December 18 for House District 14.

The seat is vacant after Rep. Christian Coomer withdrew from his re-election campaign to accept an appointment to the Georgia Court of Appeals.

A runoff is scheduled for January 15, if necessary.

Gov. Greg Abbott called a special election this week to fill a vacancy after the surprise resignation of state senator Carlos Uresti.

Uresti, a democrat representing Texas Senate District 19, was convicted on 11 felony counts of fraud and money laundering earlier this year but refused to resign until the appeals process was complete.

Uresti urged the governor to hold the election in November to coincide with the regularly scheduled election to save taxpayer money but Gov. Abbott scheduled the emergency special election for July 31, 2018, noting Uresti’s district has been “without effective representation” for over a year as a result of legal troubles.

The Guam Election Commission approved a special election for August 25.

The special election will fill the seat vacated by Public Auditor Doris Brooks. Brooks resigned her position, effective June 22, to run as a candidate for congressional delegate.

The winner of the special election will complete the remaining two years of Brooks’ term.

The filing deadline to run for the Kansas Senate seat in District 13 passed setting up unopposed elections for both the Democratic and Republican primaries on August 7.

Incumbent state Sen. Richard Hilderbrand will run against the primary winners in the special election set for November 6.

Hilderbrand was appointed last year when former Sen. Jacob LaTurner accepted the position of state treasurer.

The winner of the special election will complete the remaining two years of LaTurner’s term.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo called a special election for April 24, 2018.

The special election is needed to fill nine vacant Assembly seats and two vacant Senate seats.

The Senate races may garner a lot of fanfare as Democrats hope to win both seats and gain control of the New York Senate.

Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin announced the dates for the 1^st Suffolk Senatorial District special elections.

The primary will be held April 3, with the general on May 1.

The vacancy was created after Linda Dorcena Forry resigned to become a vice president at Suffolk Construction.

Rhode Island Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea has scheduled a special election for April 3, following the resignation of former state Sen. Jamie Doyle.

Doyle, who represented Senate District 8, unexpectedly stepped down from office citing personal reasons stemming from his struggle with alcohol.

A primary election will be held on February 27 if more than one candidate from either party qualifies to run for the empty seat.
