The Georgia Secretary of State announced a special election on February 12 for House District 176.

The seat is vacant after Rep. Jason Shaw accepted an appointment to the Georgia Public Service Commission by Gov. Nathan Deal.

A special runoff election will be held March 12, if necessary.

The Georgia General Assembly adjourned a special session on Saturday.

Legislators approved two bills allocating $270 million for emergency relief and providing $200 million of tax incentives for areas affected by Hurricane Michael.

Gov. Deal also signed a bill ratifying an executive order suspending the collection of sales and use tax on jet fuel

Gov. Nathan Deal announced a special session for November 13 regarding the costs associated with Hurricane Michael.

The hurricane lead to deaths and destruction of property in southwest Georgia last month.

The governor’s office expects the recovery costs to be more than $100 million.

The legislature will also vote on an executive order passed by Gov. Deal last July suspending the collection of sales tax on jet fuel.

The Georgia General Assembly adjourned its 2018 legislative session.

Lawmakers worked through midnight, a few minutes beyond the March 29 adjournment deadline.

In the session, lawmakers passed a $26 billion budget, expanded public transportation, expanded the state’s medical cannabis oil program, and passed a hands-free driving law preventing drivers from holding their cellphones while behind the wheel.

Gov. Nathan Deal could sign, veto, or allow the bills to become law without his signature.

The Georgia Legislature adjourned the 2017 regular session sine die yesterday, March 30, 2017.

In the final days of the session, lawmakers tackled issues such as a campus gun bill, tax credits, and medical marijuana.

Georgia is one of 17 states prohibiting guns on university campuses and Gov. Nathan Deal has shown his opposition to the issue, particularly by vetoing a similar bill last year.

Gov. Nathan Deal announced a special election will be held on April 18, 2017, for state Senate District 32.

Sen. Judson Hill resigned from the seat to run in the special election for the Sixth Congressional District, scheduled for the same day, to replace Rep. Tom Price.

If necessary, a runoff election will be held on May 16. Candidate qualifying runs for three days, beginning February 22, 2017.

Gov. Nathan Deal has set a special election for December 1, 2015 to fill a vacancy in the state senate. Sen. Ross Tolleson resigned his District 20 seat late last week, citing health issues. Six candidates, all Republicans, have already announced their intentions to run for the position.

If necessary, a runoff election will be held on December 29, 2015.

The ethics commission has agreed to settle three retaliation claims for over $1.8 million. The claims are each related to an investigation of Gov. Nathan Deal involving 2010 campaign and personal finance reports.

Under the terms, the commission’s former deputy, Sherry Streicker, will receive $1 million, former IT specialist John Hair will receive $410,000, and former staff attorney Elisabeth Murray-Obertein will receive $477,500. The settlements follow an April jury verdict awarding $700,000 plus fees to the commission’s former executive secretary, Stacey Kalberman, who argued her pay was slashed and her deputy’s position eliminated as they were preparing subpoenas in the Deal case.

Murray-Obertein, who arrived after the departures of Kalberman and Streicker, testified she was under pressure to get the Deal case resolved. Hair claimed LaBerge ordered him to alter, hide, and destroy documents related to the Deal investigation.

The commission has denied any wrongdoing and Deal has said he was not involved in any of the commission’s decisions or actions.

Gov. Nathan Deal has signed into law a bill changing the assignment of the state’s ethics agency to the State Accounting Office from the Secretary of State for budgetary purposes.

In addition to moving the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission, Senate Bill 297 modifies certain filing requirements for county and municipal candidates and candidate committees.

The bill became effective on January 31, 2014.

Governor Nathan Deal of Georgia delivered writs of election today setting February 7, 2012 as the date for special elections to fill vacancies in House District 60 and House District 107.

The election for House District 60 will occur in portions of Clayton, DeKalb and Fulton Counties.

The election for House District 107 will occur in portions of Gwinnett and Walton Counties. The runoff election, if needed, will be March 6, 2012.
