Although Republicans won an overall majority, U.S. Rep. Emilia Sykes beat out Republican Kevin Coughlin in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District by 2%.

The area includes all of Summit County, a large chunk of Stark County (including Canton), and a small sliver of Portage County.

Sykes won the newly redrawn 13th District in the 2022 midterm elections.

Voters approved Question 1 with an overwhelming majority of the vote.

The ballot question sets an aggregate $5,000 limit for individuals, business entities, and PACs contributing to PACs making independent expenditures.

Beginning December 1, contribution limits will be adjusted every two years based on the consumer price index.

Republican Gov. Phil Scott won the Vermont gubernatorial election against Democrat Esther Charlestin.

Scott, who became governor in 2017, secured close to 73% of the vote.

Republicans swept three state Supreme Court races, giving the GOP six of seven seats beginning in January.

Incumbent Democrat Justice Melody Stewart lost to Justice Joe Deters, a Republican appointed to the bench by Gov. Mike DeWine two years ago.

Deters opted to challenge Stewart rather than run to retain his seat.

Incumbent Justice Michael Donnelly, a Cleveland area Democrat, lost his seat to Republican challenger Megan Shanahan, a Hamilton County judge making her first statewide run.

Republican Franklin County Common Pleas Court Judge Dan Hawkins beat Democrat Eighth District Court of Appeals Judge Lisa Forbes.

In January, Justice Jennifer Brunner will be the sole Democrat on the court and the only Democrat in Ohio statewide office.

Representative Adam Schiff defeated his opponent Republican Steve Garvey, a former Los Angeles Dodgers baseball player.

Rep. Schiff won the Senate seat formerly held by the late Diane Feinstein who passed away last September.

The seat is currently being held by Sen. Laphonza Butler.

Schiff secured victory after gaining 57% of the vote.

Incumbent Gov. Spencer Cox defeated Democratic candidate Brian King 56% to 31% in Utah’s gubernatorial race on November 5.

King, a trial lawyer and state representative, has served as Utah’s House minority leader for eight years.

While moderate Republicans have historically fared well in Utah’s statewide elections, Cox has recently sought to convince voters that he is more conservative than his record shows.

Jenniffer González of Puerto Rico’s pro-statehood New Progressive Party is leading polls early November 6 in the U.S. territory’s race for governor.

With 91% of precincts reporting, González received 39% of votes compared with 33% obtained by Juan Dalmau of the Independence Party and Citizen Victory Movement.

Trailing González and Dalmau is Jesús Manuel Ortiz of the Popular Democratic Party, which supports the island’s territorial status.

For decades, the New Progressive Party and the Popular Democratic Party would receive at least 90% of all votes, but that began to change in 2016.

Newer parties are attracting more voters given Puerto Rico’s economic and political turmoil while a younger generation is decrying corruption, persistent power outages and a lack of affordable housing, among other things.

On November 5, voters in Colorado rejected a ballot measure establishing top four primaries and ranked choice voting in general elections.

Proposition 131 aimed to eliminate party primaries, and instead all candidates, regardless of party, would compete in an open primary.

The top four finishers in each race would advance to the general election, where voters would rank candidates for each office in order of preference.

If one candidate were to receive more than 50% of the vote, he or she would win.

If not, the last place finisher in that race would be eliminated, and the votes would be reallocated to the candidate the voters rank second.

The elimination process would continue until one candidate had 50% of all the votes cast.

As of 9:00 a.m. November 6, with 73% of the precincts reporting, Proposition 131 failed 56% to 45%.

On November 5, voters in Arizona rejected a ballot measure to implement ranked choice voting in general elections and defeated a competing measure to require partisan primaries.

The ranked choice voting measure, Proposition 140, requires primaries in which candidates, regardless of partisan affiliation, appear on a single ballot.

The measure allows a certain number to advance to the general election, such as top-two or top-four primaries.

In contrast, the partisan primary measure, Proposition 133, is contradictory because a primary cannot be both partisan and include all candidates running in the same primary regardless of party.

While Proposition 133 doesn’t state that ranked-choice voting can’t be used in general elections, Proposition 140 conditions ranked-choice voting on a primary system change.

Proposition 133 would have added the existing system of partisan primaries to the Arizona Constitution, where voters select candidates to represent political parties in the general election.

As of 9:00 a.m. November 6, with more than 58% of the precincts reporting, Proposition 133 failed 58% to 42%.

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson won his bid for Governor against his Republican U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert.

Reichert had always faced an uphill battle as it has been 40 years since the state last had a Republican governor.

The final tally of votes saw Ferguson winning with 56% of the vote.

Businessman Bernie Moreno defeated U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown by just under 4% to help shift control of the U.S. Senate to the Republican Party.

Both of Ohio’s Senate seats will be occupied by Republicans for the first time in 18 years, when Brown unseated future Gov. Mike DeWine.

Moreno won 50.2% of the vote and Brown received 46.4%.

Republican Tim Sheehy defeated Democrat Senator Jon Tester this past election day.

After seeing his polling numbers down over the summer, Tester was unable to overcome the uphill battle in the final weeks leading up to the election.

Sheehy, a former U.S. Navy Seal, secured victory after gaining 53% of the vote.

On November 5, six of the ward seats for the Council of the District of Columbia City were up for election.

Incumbent Brooke Pinto won re-election for Washington D.C. City Council Ward 2.

Meanwhile, Janeese Lewis George won reelection to her seat unchallenged for the City Council Ward 4 seat.

Wendell Felder won the Ward 7 current held by outgoing incumbent Vincent Gray, who endorsed Felder in the Democratic Party primary against nine other candidates.

Trayon White, currently a member of council representing Ward 8, also won reelection.

Additionally, the two at-large seats were won by Robert White and Christina Henderson.

On November 5, voters in Ohio rejected a ballot measure to create a 15-member Ohio Citizens Redistricting Commission to draw congressional and state legislative districts.

Ohio will continue to use its current redistricting method led by state lawmakers and a commission of seven elected officials.

The state will keep its current state legislative maps through 2030 but the congressional map, approved without Democratic support, will be redrawn next year for the 2026 election.

As of this morning, the amendment failed 54% to 46%.
