A special election has been scheduled for Pennsylvania House District 24 to be held on April 5.

The seat became vacant when former Rep. Edward Gainey was sworn in as the new mayor of Pittsburgh.

The winner of the special election will serve the remainder of the two-year term set to expire at the end of this year.

A second special election is also expected to be called to fill the House District 19 seat Rep. Jake Wheatley vacated when he resigned to become Mayor Gainey’s chief of staff.

A special election has been scheduled for Pennsylvania Senate District 5 to be held on May 17, the same day as the primary election.

The seat became vacant when Sen. John Sabatina Jr. resigned following his election to the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas.

The winner of the special election will serve the remainder of the four-year term set to expire in November 2024.

Gov. Newsom announced a special election to replace former Congressman Devin Nunes to be held on June 7, with the primary being held on April 5.

The election in Congressional District 22 will follow the old Congressional map.

The new map, approved late last year, will be used for the November 8 elections.

Nunes stepped down to take over as chief executive of former President Trump’s new media company, Trump Media & Technology Group.

New York Gov. Hochul announced special elections for February 15 to fill vacancies in Assembly District 60 and 72.

The seats became vacant when former Assembly members Charles Barron and Carmen De La Rosa began serving on the New York City Council.

Ohio is embroiled in the biggest public corruption case in state history and the largest open inquiry in any statehouse in the country. In June 2021, lawmakers expelled Larry Householder from his legislative seat, nearly a year after he was charged in a federal racketeering case. Householder, who was investigated by federal authorities two decades ago during his first stint as speaker, has pleaded not guilty. The racketeering case is expected to go to trial in 2022. But he is far from the first public official to be embroiled in scandal.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced a special election to fill a vacancy in the House of Representatives following the election of District 15 Rep. Abdullah Hammoud as mayor of Dearborn.

The special primary election will be held on March 1 and the general election will be held on May 3.

Gov. Andy Beshear announced a special election on February 22, 2022, to fill the vacancy in Kentucky House District 42 created by the resignation of Rep. Reginald Meeks.

Under state law, when a legislator vacancy occurs while lawmakers are not in session, the Governor may call the special election.

Meeks, who has represented House District 42 since January 2001, announced his retirement December 17, saying that he needed time to focus on his health and family.

The winner of the election will take office as soon as the results are certified by both the Jefferson County Board of Elections and the State Board of Elections.

The issue of paying members’ spouses is expected to be central in the corruption trial of Councilperson Kenyatta Johnson. Prosecutors have accused him of accepting a bribe in the form of charter school consulting work for his wife in exchange for helping a group in his district secure a zoning change. The potential for Johnson to take official action to secure work for his wife also surfaced in the corruption trial this fall of Councilperson Bobby Henon.

South Carolina’s Ethics Commission will decide whether a former Richland County recreation chief broke the law by signing off on family members’ raises and promotions. A hearing on the ethics charges was held after James Brown III was cleared of criminal charges related to his tenure. Brown, the head of the Richland County Recreation Commission until his resignation in 2016 amid allegations of nepotism and sexual harassment, faces six counts of violating state ethics laws meant to ensure public officials do not use their position for personal gain.

A former Houston Independent School District trustee and board president agreed to cooperate with the federal government for her role in an alleged scheme in which prosecutors say she kept a “bribe ledger” to keep track of $20,000 in payments from a contractor, part of an investigation that also led to the indictment of the district’s former chief operating officer. Rhonda Skillern-Jones used her role at the district to push for the hiring of a landscaping contractor who was later at the center of an alleged illegal kickback scheme.

Tim Eyman, the serial initiative filer and conservative provocateur who owes the state of Washington more than $5 million after years of “particularly egregious” campaign finance violations, is in default and staring at the court-ordered sale of his assets. Eyman is under a court-ordered plan requiring him to make monthly $10,000 payments to pay down his fine and other fees. He has missed his last four monthly payments. A judge ordered his bankruptcy case shifted to Chapter 7, which means the court appoints a trustee who will be responsible for selling Eyman’s assets and distributing the proceeds to his debtors.

A special election for Houston City Council District G is scheduled for January 25, 2022.

The special election was called after former incumbent Greg Travis resigned on October 27 to run for the District 133 seat in the Texas House of Representatives.

Travis served on the 16-member Houston City Council from 2016 to 2021.

Five candidates filed to run in the special election by the deadline: Mary Nan Huffman, Piper Madland, D. Duke Millard, Raul Reyes Jr., and Houshang Taghizadeh.

House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn announced the special election for Virginia House District 89 will be held on January 11, 2022.

The election is to fill the seat vacated by Del. Jay Jones, who is resigning to prioritize time with his family.
