The runoff election between candidates Brandon Johnson and Paul Vallas is scheduled for April 4.
Lightfoot is the first incumbent to lose a reelection bid in 40 years.

A runoff election for mayor will be held next month due to such close voting results in the August 6 Nashville municipal election.
Megan Barry and David Fox came in first and second, respectively, in a field of seven candidates. Barry, an at-large member of Metro Council, earned about 1,500 more votes than Fox, former chair of the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools Board.
The runoff election will be held on September 10.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel failed to garner enough votes in Tuesday’s consolidated primary to avoid heading to a runoff election. Emanuel required more than 50 percent of the vote to win the election outright.
Although he finished first in the five candidate field with just over 45 percent of the vote, the city will now hold a runoff mayoral election for the first time in history.
The runoff is scheduled for April 7, and the mayor will face Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia.

The U.S. Senate primary between incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran and tea party challenger Chris McDaniel remains too close to call after the June 3 election date.
If neither candidate receives 50 percent of the vote, a runoff election will be scheduled for June 24.
The race was considered one of the few remaining chances for a tea party victory after a string of primary challenges ended in defeat.
