Seattle’s mayoral race, a hotly contested race between current and former Seattle City Council presidents, ended in a landslide victory for Bruce Harrell with 65% of the votes.

The election, a race between progressive and moderate Democrats, was affected by the progressive agenda of defunding the police and addressing homelessness.

The incumbent Jenny Durkan and progressive candidate Lorena Gonzalez both took political hits over their handling of the coronavirus pandemic and BLM protests.

Durkan did not seek reelection. Bruce Harrell is Seattle’s First Asian American Mayor.

Michelle Wu, City Council member and attorney, will be the next mayor of Boston.

Wu defeated fellow councilmember Annissa Essaibi George by 28 percentage points.

She will be the first woman and the first person of color to serve as mayor.

Democrat Eric Adams defeated Curtis Silwa 66% to 28.8% in New York City’s mayoral race.

Adams is a retired New York Police Department captain who previously served as Brooklyn Borough President.

Adams will succeed current Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Justin Bibb, a nonprofit executive, will be the next mayor of Cleveland, Ohio.

Bibb defeated Cleveland City Council President Kevin Kelley by 26 percentage points to become the city’s second-youngest mayor.

The Chesapeake City Council, on a vote of 5-4, rejected an ordinance moving mayoral, City Council, and School Board elections from even-numbered years to odd-numbered years.

The ordinance was introduced in response to the passage of Virginia’s Senate Bill 1157 that requires local elections to be conducted in November rather than May.

Proponents of the ordinance cited concerns about local issues being overshadowed by national issues, while opponents point to higher voter turnouts in even-numbered year elections and Virginia’s long history of connections between voter suppression and odd-numbered year elections for reasons to reject the proposed shift.
