This year, John Chames and I agreed to co-chair the 2015 Circle of Red and Men Go Red campaigns for the American Heart Association in Akron. February 6th is National Wear Red Day.
Many are not aware cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of women. Go Red For Women’s mission is to save the lives of women – wives, mothers, sisters, aunts, daughters and friends – by creating awareness and helping to educate the women in our lives. As a leader in the Greater Akron community we have been asking for support of this mission.
As a member of the State and Federal Communications Community, we are looking to you to also help us bring this critical issue to light in your community. Wherever you live, consider making a contribution to become members of Men Go Red and the Circle of Red to support the 2015 Go Red For Women Campaign. Find more information at www.goredforwomen.org.
We have attended this event year after year and we continue to be inspired by the sea of women and men proudly displaying their red, as well as the heartfelt stories of women in our community who have been touched by cardiovascular disease. We hope that you will join us as members of the Circle of Red and Men Go Red campaigns. We can all make a difference.
Until next month, remember it is not just a man’s disease. One out of three women die of heart disease and stroke. And, it can be prevented.
Thank you,

For the third year, State and Federal Communications has joined the American Heart Association in its Go Red for Women program. This year I am a member of the Circle of Red Society, and John Chames is a member of the Red Tie Society.
This is still an important message.
TODAY, heart disease is still the No. 1 killer of women, causing one in three deaths each year. But it can be prevented. TODAY, Make It Your Mission to learn how to stop this killer, and then tell five women you love you want them to live. TODAY, you can help us stop heart disease in our lifetime. You have an opportunity to support this mission. Call your local American Heart Association and make a contribution. Here is how your donation can make a difference:
- $1,000 provides the newest CPR guidelines to more than 60 emergency care providers, teaching them the most effective skills for treating cardiac arrest.
- $500 allows us to distribute the innovative CPR Anytime to 10 women who can then train 2 to 3 friends or loved ones.
- $250 will teach 50 women in your community the connection between good food and good health by showing them heart-healthy ways to prepare food using the Recipes for the Heart cookbook.
- $100 can equip one hospital or health department with American Stroke Association resources to educate female patients, the public, and health professionals on stroke prevention and life after stroke.
TODAY, check out www.heart.org and learn more about heart health. TODAY is the day to make a difference.
Thank you,

Go Red for Women
Let’s build healthier lives!
I am updating my article from a year ago when I first joined the Go Red For Women campaign in Akron. This year I was able to have my husband, JohnChames join me. (Yes, I put his first and last name together because there are a lot of Johns in my family. The only way to keep them separate is to use the last name.) If you recall last year’s photo you will notice this year a number of additional men joined the Red Tie Society. If you haven’t found us in the picture, the hint is we are holding hands across the middle of the escalator at Macy’s. And, yes, that is Jim Tressel near him.
Did you know American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate intensity physical activity? [That is about 22 minutes per day.] Here are some easy ways you can add physical activity into your daily life:
- Use coffee breaks to take 5- or 10-minute walks. The weather is nice (except for Denver and Minneapolis) so time to pull out the sneakers and walk around the block.
- In parking lots, park your car as far away as you can. At State and Federal Communications, I have parking space #1 so I need to make sure I am walking up the stairs during the day to see the folks on the second floor—instead of taking the elevator.
- Get your personal heart-health status and learn how regular physical activity can help improve your health. Take the American Heart Association’s My Life Check assessment at mylifecheck.heart.org.
- Walk a flight of stairs 10 times a day. I am on my third Fitbit since last year and it helps track the steps and flights of stairs I take every day. And, as it relates to steps, try to reach 10,000 a day.
- Visit www.startwalkingnow.org to download the new Walking Path mobile phone application and find nearby walking paths, track your steps, and motivate your walking friends.
The American Heart Association’s mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Until next month, join the fight against women’s #1 killer—Heart Disease by donating to your local Heart Association.
Thanks,

Raising Awareness about Women and Heart Disease
Akron Life magazine’s special feature
Elizabeth Bartz, President and CEO of State and Federal Communications, appears in the April 2012 issue of Akron Life magazine. The publication is featuring a special supplement honoring the American Heart Association’s ninth Go Red for Women campaign.
What is Go Red for Women, you ask?
According to their site, “Cardiovascular disease claimed the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year, yet women were not paying attention. In fact, many even dismissed it as an ‘older man’s disease.’ To dispel the myths and raise awareness of heart disease as the number one killer of women, the American Heart Association created Go Red For Women – a passionate, emotional, social initiative designed to empower women to take charge of their heart health.”
Elizabeth Bartz is one of the Circle of Red Members – women who are leaders in their community, each offering resources, time, and influence to find a cure for heart disease. She is quoted, “I go red for my mom, my sisters, my daughter, my aunts, my cousins, and all of my friends.”
For those of you in Northeast Ohio, find a copy of Akron Life magazine. The Go Red for Women feature will inspire you!
