Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker issued an executive order calling special elections for two legislative seats.

He initially refused to call the elections, defying a court order issued last week. He lost on appeal Wednesday and was forced to call the elections by noon today.

Special primary elections will be held on May 15 with special general elections on June 12.

Republican lawmakers sought to change election laws after the court order was issued so Walker could avoid calling the elections; they have since abandoned their efforts.

Wisconsin Republicans plan to call an extraordinary session to amend state election law rather than comply with a court order to hold special elections.

Last week, a judge ordered Gov. Walker to schedule special elections by March 29 to fill two vacant legislative seats.

Current law requires the governor to call a special election for any vacancy occurring prior to May of an election year.

Walker doesn’t believe the law applies in this case, as the vacancies occurred in December; he claims the requirement only applies to vacancies occurring between January and May of an election year.

Democrats argue Walker is refusing to hold the elections because Republicans may lose the seats.

A statewide special election will be held June 5, the same date as the primary elections, on a proposed amendment to the South Dakota Constitution.

If approved, the amendment will affect Marsy’s Law victim’s rights provisions approved by voters in 2016.

The attorney general’s deadline to prepare a statement, title, explanation, and recitation of a “Yes” or “No” vote for the proposed amendment is March 27.

Dane County Circuit Judge Josann Reynolds ruled Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker must call special elections to fill legislative vacancies.

Two seats were left vacant in December when Republican lawmakers resigned to work in Walker’s administration.

Reynolds, whom Walker appointed in 2014, found he has a duty to call the elections; failure to do so would infringe on the voting rights of the districts’ residents.

He must issue an order by March 29 calling elections within the next 11 weeks.

Gov. Phil Bryant has appointed Mississippi Agriculture and Commerce Commissioner Cindy Hyde-Smith to the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by Thad Cochran.

Cochran is stepping down due to health problems on April 1.

Hyde-Smith will be sworn in by Vice President Mike Pence in April and will run for the remainder of Cochran’s term in the November 6 special election.

Gov. Kim Reynolds called a special election for Senate District 25.

The special election has been called to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of State Sen. Bill Dix.

Dix resigned after videos of the married lawmaker kissing a lobbyist were posted online.

Reynolds has set the special election for April 10, 2018.

California Gov. Jerry Brown called a special election to fill the Senate District 32 seat.

The special primary election will be June 5, the same day as the statewide primary, with a potential runoff to follow on August 7.

The seat opened after Tony Mendoza resigned amid sexual harassment allegations.

Gov. Phil Bryant has called a special election to fill the vacancy for House District 30 on May 8.

The seat was vacated by Rep. Robert Huddleston, who had two years remaining in his term.

If no candidate receives a majority of the vote, a runoff election will be held on May 29.

On March 7, former Manitoba premier Greg Selinger will officially resign from provincial politics. Selinger announced his resignation amid allegations of MLA Stan Struthers’s inappropriate behavior while Selinger was leader of the party.

A special by-election for Selinger’s St. Boniface constituency MLA seat will be called by Premier Brian Pallister in the next six months, as required by law. Pallister will not commit to calling the by-election before summer, according to the Winnipeg Free Press.

Gov. Asa Hutchinson has scheduled a special election on August 14, 2018, to fill the state Senate District 8 seat vacated by Jake Files.

The primary will be May 22 and a primary runoff, if necessary, on June 19.

Files resigned after pleading guilty to charges of wire fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced on February 16 that a special election will take place for House District 13 on May 5 to replace state Rep. Leighton Schubert.

Schubert resigned on February 4 to do legal work for Blinn College.

Early voting for this election will begin on April 23.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo called a special election for April 24, 2018.

The special election is needed to fill nine vacant Assembly seats and two vacant Senate seats.

The Senate races may garner a lot of fanfare as Democrats hope to win both seats and gain control of the New York Senate.

Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin announced the dates for the 1^st Suffolk Senatorial District special elections.

The primary will be held April 3, with the general on May 1.

The vacancy was created after Linda Dorcena Forry resigned to become a vice president at Suffolk Construction.
