On February 13, voters in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador will go to the polls to vote for candidates for the House of Assembly. The original fixed election date was October 10, 2023.
However, because Premier Andrew Furey was sworn in August 19, 2020, an election then became required to be held within one year of the swearing-in. Furey replaces former Premier Dwight Ball, who resigned in 2020 after questions arose about various government-awarded contracts.
This is the first time in the province elections have been held on a Saturday.

On April 17, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Dwight Ball issued a writ of election for the provincial general election to take place on May 16.
On the same day, Bruce Chaulk, the Chief Electoral Officer of Newfoundland and Labrador, issued election writs to all 40 district returning officers of the province announcing the new date.
The advance poll date is May 9 and the deadline for candidate nominations is April 25.
Elections NL is also set to accept early voting applications, which will be available between April 25 and May 9.
Ball called for the election after tabling the budget.
“I am now seeking a mandate from the people of our province to continue our plan,” Ball announced according to the Western Star.

On November 5, Elections Canada announced several by-elections for the House of Commons will be held on December 11. The federal by-elections will be held for the electoral districts of Battlefords–Lloydminster (Saskatchewan), Bonavista–Burin–Trinity (Newfoundland and Labrador), Scarborough–Agincourt (Ontario), and South Surrey–White Rock (British Columbia) to fill vacancies in the House of Commons.
Battlefords–Lloydminster (Saskatchewan) MP Gerry Ritz resigned on August 31 in order to retire from politics.
Bonavista–Burin–Trinity (Newfoundland and Labrador) MP Judy Foote resigned Bonavista-Burin-Trinity in September. Foote has been on leave since April for personal family medical reasons. In August, she had resigned her position as Minister of Public Services and Procurement.
The seat for Scarborough–Agincourt (Ontario) became vacant on September 14 when MP Arnold Chan died at the age of 50 of cancer after a three-year battle.
South Surrey–White Rock (British Columbia) MP Dianne Watts resigned to run for the provincial Liberal leadership.
