Gov. Mike DeWine called a special session of the General Assembly to begin on Tuesday, May 28.

The purpose of the first special session in 20 years is to pass legislation ensuring both major party presidential candidates will be on the Ohio ballot in November.

A legislative fix is necessary because the late date of this year’s Democratic convention comes after Ohio’s statutory deadline to certify presidential candidates for the November ballot.

In the past, such issues have been handled with quick legislative fixes but a number of Republican legislators have balked this year.

Lawmakers will also consider legislation to prohibit campaign spending by foreign nationals.

The West Virginia Legislature has convened the anticipated special session for the month of May.

The session started on the 19^th and has already resulted in agreement on several critical pieces of the state budget legislation.

Provided funding will include $5 million to the Department of Health and Human Services; a new agriculture lab on the WVSU campus; and state paving projects.

The session is being held during the interim committee meeting dates when all lawmakers are together to help ease the burden on taxpayers.

The session is predicted to last until the May 24 when the interim committees are finished meeting.

Lawmakers are convening a special session called by Gov. Tate Reeves to finalize a $10 billion economic project on January 25.

The project’s aim is to create two large scale data centers.

The name of the company will be announced after the session concludes.

This session is similar to a previous special session held last week for an equally impactful economic project.

As before, this special session could last as little as one day.

Lawmakers are convening a special session called by Gov. Tate Reeves to finalize a huge economic project in an effort to bolster Mississippi’s job market and economy.

Reeves said the project will create 2,000 jobs in Marshall County with an average annual salary of $66,000.

The special session is occurring during the regular 2024 legislative session and is predicted to last only a single day.

The Texas Legislature adjourned its third special session November 7 and announced a fourth special session on the same day to address the unresolved issue of school vouchers.

In Gov. Greg Abbott’s special session proclamation, he acknowledged the Texas Legislature made progress over the past month protecting Texans from forced COVID-19 vaccinations and increasing penalties for human smuggling but said more work must be done.

The agenda items of the fourth special session include the establishment of an education savings account program, and state border security.

Gov. Brian Kemp called for a special legislative session to begin November 29 due to the recent striking down of Georgia’s legislative and congressional voting maps by a federal judge.

The judge stated the maps violated the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and has set a deadline of December 8 for state lawmakers to draw new ones.

The maps will be redrawn to include multiple black-majority districts including two new districts for the Senate and five for the House.

The Legislature adjourned the special session on October 25 after authorizing a budget to ensure the continued operation of state government.

During the three-day session, 14 bills were passed to reconstruct the legislation that was invalidated by the state Supreme Court as unconstitutional for violating a single-subject requirement.

The bills included transfers from state government funds, K-12 education funding, a $125 million incentive program for the development of a fertilizer plant, a criminal penalty for supplying drugs resulting in overdose deaths and injuries, and effective dates for transitioning the state’s public employee pension plan to a 401(k)-style plan for new hires.

Gov. DeSantis called on the state Legislature to hold a special session to discuss further sanctions on Iran in response to Iran’s support of Hamas.

DeSantis wants to expand the number of industries on Florida’s existing scrutinized companies list and strengthen prohibitions against investing in companies that do business with states sponsoring terrorism.

The session is expected to convene on November 6 and adjourn on November 9.

Gov. Doug Burgum issued Executive Order 2023-09 calling for a special session of the Legislature to begin Monday, October 23, to authorize a budget bill to ensure the continued operation of state government.

The North Dakota Supreme Court invalidated Senate Bill 2015, which included the budget, declaring the bill unconstitutional because it violated the state constitution’s single-subject requirement for bills.

The special session is expected to last three to five days.

Gov. Lamont called for a second special session to convene on September 26.

This session is seeking the approval of several pieces of legislation, including changing the date set by state statute for Connecticut to hold its presidential preference primary and also authorizing the Office of Secretary of the State to retain election monitors in certain municipalities.

Connecticut is currently one of the last states in the nation to hold its presidential primary.

The legislation being considered will move the date of the primary up four weeks from the last Tuesday in April to the first Tuesday in April.

Gov. Lamont called the Legislature into special session to consider the nomination of Nora Dannehy to the Supreme Court.

The governor’s proclamation compels the special session to begin on September 19.

A second special session proclamation by Lamont is anticipated later this month to consider legislation changing the date for Connecticut’s presidential preference primary.

Gov. Glen Younkin has called the General Assembly to reconvene for a special session.

The session will address the state budget and will take up issues such as tax relief and investments for local families and businesses.

The special session will begin on September 6.

Gov. Tony Evers signed Executive Order 208 calling for a special session of the Legislature to begin Wednesday, September 20.

The session will consider and act upon two proposals to enact a comprehensive workforce development package.

The proposals would use some of the state’s projected $4 billion surplus in this biennium to:

• Support child care providers,
• Support a paid family and medical leave program for private employers,
• And create new investment in higher education.

Gov. Jim Justice called a special legislative session convening on Sunday, August 6.

The proclamation issued for this special session lists 44 items for consideration including the creation of a new state park and several bills regarding the state correctional officer shortage.

This special session is expected to last through at least Tuesday, August 8.
